Unfortunately, our community still has children who are suffering from poverty and hunger.
In an effort to support and feed these children, HMC has opened Our Neighborhood School program.
The program provides impoverished children with dinner five times a week, while also offering them after-school programs and classes until 6pm during the weekdays. Our Neighborhood School supported 156 children enrolled in 6 elementary schools across the country in 2005.
The after-school programs helped children with their school learning materials and complete their assignments.
Special classes in the arts were also provided, alongside withpsychological evaluations, individual counseling, and group guide activities for children whose family lives have been seriously disrupted by impoverishment.
Our Neighborhood School used the classrooms of the registered students so that they would not be isolated and sought to attract more and more children by welcoming them.
In order to ensure that these children are not alienated from cultural benefits, the program guides also took them to movie theaters, live performance shows, and amusement parks.
In an effort to make the program more meaningful through mutual understanding between the volunteers and the children, we invited them on field tours around the Asan and Ulsan plants, special lectures on economics, and Christmas parties where the children mingled with the HMC volunteers.
HMC will continue to develop more effective programs to take care of the marginalized members of our society.
